Legal English candidate improves speaking/listening and writing skills

Joaquin comes from Madrid.  He came to Heritage English for 2 weeks immersion.
At the end of the training he expressed his appreciation as follows:-

"The things I have appreciated the most have been the good relationship with my teachers and their families.

It was rewarding it made me feel very comfortable. The host family was really nice to me which also made it easier to take advantage of the lessons. I also liked the fact that the lessons were balanced.

I think I have improved my speaking skills as well as my listening and my grammar. I remembered a lot of forgotten vocabulary and I improved my speaking and listening in topics such as negotiation and business English.

The combination of being in the classroom in the morning s and spending the afternoon outside of the classroom in the teacher’s home studying was relaxing and useful. Having three different teachers is also very helpful otherwise we could have got bored or tired with the same teacher for the whole programme.

A welcome lunch break between lessons with teacher Rosie

I will use my new English skills in writing reports and negotiations on business topics  and when I start work as a lawyer."

Thank you Joaquin, your family and teachers were very happy to know you.  Please keep in touch.

Exercise improves memory - now official

For more than a decade, researchers have connected exercise to better brain health over time.  But a new study found that just a single session of exercise can improve memory retention. The report published in the journal Current Biology, suggests that exercising after learning a task can help people remember that task over the long term.

How is this possible?

Experts speculate that exercise triggers the release of neurotransmitters in the brain that lead to the creation of certain proteins that encourage memory retention.

At Heritage English we were pleased to read about this scientific endorsement of our policy.

We have always believed that it is important for students on intensive immersion language courses to get out in the fresh air and exercise after study.  Depending on their programme of study we make sure that an outdoor activity is included in the day.  Sometimes it can be a whole afternoon out and about in the local area with the teacher, talking and meeting new people.  Even on a full study day we make sure that even a walk by the sea or in the town is taken before returning to the classroom.

Marc and Carles return for another summer study homestay

We were so pleased to hear from their father again this year, booking Carles and Marc for another Heritage English study holiday.  This year they had Susie and Toby teaching them and they made great progress, proving to be charming and hard-working Spanish boys.

Thanks for coming back.  We hope to see you again in 2017.

Photos to come!

Business English for Finance is a success for Gonzalo

On his arrival Gonzalo was a B2 upper intermediate student with a desire to attain C1 level for studying at London School of Economics.  He stayed with a family in Lymington and had daily one-to-one lessons with two teachers over the time he was here.

It was a tough and very intensive timetable for a 21-year old graduate, but he survived and has left us to continue his studies in London.  His teachers, Stephen and Cherry made sure he had some afternoon time out of the classroom, especially on the final week of his 3-week stay.

Here you can see Gonzalo with teacher Stephen, enjoying the warm sunshine on Bournemouth beach.  Yes, we do get some beach days in England!!!  Or did Gonzalo bring it with him from Madrid?

We wish Gonzo every success in his future career in finance.

Gonzalo set for career in Finance

Lessons with Cherry in the first week
Gonzalo has come to Heritage English for a 3-week intensive one-to-one course in English for business and finance.

Aged 21 he has just graduated from university in Madrid.  Whilst he already has an upper intermediate level in English, he needs to improve his fluency, his use of tenses and his financial and business vocabulary.

He has been assigned two teachers during his stay in England.  Cherry and Stephen are working together to help him achieve his goals.  Out of lessons Gonzalo is socialising with his host family who have a daughter the same age.  He has been meeting a range of people which gives him the conversational practice that consolidates the work he is doing in lessons.

Gonzalo is working hard on this very intensive timetable and we anticipate that after a further two weeks he will easily achieve his targets.

Swiss Business student is delighted with immersion training: "It was perfect - better than expected"

This photograph shows our latest client on Friday evening driving the motor boat of Miles and Susie, his hosts from Milford to Lymington for a celebration drink in the town.

It may look like fun, but Thomas was tired after a week of intensive lessons Monday to Friday with just one afternoon free on Wednesday.  This mid-week break was well needed as 8 hours per day one-to-one lessons were very intensive.  He was rewarded on Friday with a visit to the Beaulieu Motor Museum and then this surprise outing at sea.

Thomas works for a Swiss company who manufacture a range of air filters.  He is in charge of the laboratory and is an expert in ISO standardisation.  New responsibilities require that he attends international conferences where he needs to present results and to explain ideas.

Before coming to Heritage English Thomas lacked confidence in speaking and gaining fluency was his main target for the training.

He also needed a complete revision of the grammatical structures, tenses in English.  Gail gave this overview which he found easy to understand, picking up the rules and applying them quickly.
Celia presented him with many new phrases for speaking effectively in meetings and for making presentations effectively in English.

At the end of the week, this is what he wrote:

"Everything was perfect!  The one-to-one lessons, the Friday excursion and also the kind host family.
"It was a really full immersion week and the program was adapted to my needs.  It was better than I expected
"Your warm welcome made it a week I will always keep in good memory!
"One week is too short to get perfect professional communication skills.  But I feel I made a step forward and I feel more confident in speaking

"Many thanks to everyone for your effort"

Thank you for choosing Heritage English and we wish you all the best in the future.  Keep up the practice Thomas.

Strawberries, cream tea and champagne!

Denis, who had 2 weeks of one-to-one intensive immersion English lessons with us in February, came back last week for a short holiday to show the area to Carlos (right)  They enjoyed their stay very much, despite the sudden cold weather we had!

They visited the city of Bath, then Winchester Cathedral before dropping in to Milford on Sea for 2 nights at the Beach House Hotel.  Sam, his host invited them to dinner one evening and the next day they visited us at Newlands Manor for an English cream tea with strawberries.  We had saved a bottle of champagne from the crate of 12 bottles that he so generously sent to his teachers and hosts to thank them for his training.  A lovely occasion.  Thank you from all the Heritage English Team.

Intensive English course begins for yacht racer

Working hard in one-to-one lessons
As crew member of a racing yacht, Kivanc needs to improve his general English in order to understand and give instructions to his team when racing.

Kivanc is from Turkey and he has three weeks to reach his goals.  After one week his teachers are optimistic about his potential.

His lead teacher, Gail, says that he is able to communicate independently at times, but there are grammar and vocabulary gaps in his English that need to be
thoroughly re-visited for him to achieve his goals.  She is confident that he can do this.

We will report back on the Student Blog at the end of his training!

Business English candidate gains confidence for personal Presentation

Our latest student came to Heritage English for one week.  His English was at an intermediate level, but he needed confidence to deliver a presentation at a forthcoming management training course for his company.

Jean-Charles will need to socialise in English also when he travels to five different countries for several weeks of training seminars.

He worked very hard during his lessons and he found conversation with his host family in the evenings helped him to gain the confidence he needed in speaking.  His teachers also noticed how his listening comprehension improved and by the end of the week he was able to understand without asking for clarification - even when people spoke quickly.

Pictured (left) with his hosts, Becky and John with the girls and their dog before leaving to put into practice what he has learned.

Thank you, I enjoyed my stay in Lymington.  All was great!
Host family, teachers, we had a lot of interesting conversations - and good meals!"

"I'm really more confident after a week in Lymington.  I would like to continue this training and becoming fluent in English."

We hope you can return to reach the upper-intermediate level you deserve.

Good luck!
Celia and Gail

CEO achieves business English goals in 2-weeks intensive immersion

Hard at work in lessons with Stephen Lee

.
Prior to making a career change, Denis needed to improve his English for future career situations.  He wanted to improve his grammar, his vocabulary and in particular to practise talking about his career and to describe his professional skills.
Denis had the opportunity to stay for two weeks, so that he had the variety of staying with two different hosts, one in town and one by the seaside.  At the weekend he took the train to London to visit friends.

Lesson a Newlands Manor
On the first week he had lessons with Gail and Celia who explained present and past tenses and taught him some useful vocabulary specifically targeted at various topics associated with his personal interests and his professional needs.
On the second week, he had lessons with Stephen Lee who worked with Denis on questions and answers for a senior job interview.  This writing and oral practice gave our student a great deal of practice and the confidence that he needed when speaking in English in many different situations.
On his last day with Celia, Denis wrote:  "I really appreciated the one-to-one lessons with three different teachers.  This variety really increased the efficiency of the immersion course.  It's a very dynamic method to learn quickly and make progress.
Also I appreciated the host family welcome, their hospitality and open-minded conversation.
"Did I achieve my objectives? Yes!  and more than that.  The immersion method gives you the opportunity to discover a beautiful region, its history and nice food!
We have been told to expect Denis back - for a holiday!
Thank you for coming to Heritage English
Good luck with the interviews.

A good opportunity for me to express myself in English more easily, says French Business student

Sent by her company to their Fareham office for 2 weeks, Nadia needed to improve her English in order to explain a new financial software programme to colleagues in Asia, Canada and Europe following her new appointment in this role.

She had lessons every morning with Stephen and Lynne at the hotel where she was staying.  In the afternoon she worked with English colleagues at their Fareham based offices.  Her level improved from Elementary to Pre-intermediate in this time.

At the end of the course Nadia said:

"Course and teaching were very useful for me.  Teaching in this way was very pleasant for me and it's made easier for me to express something even if I made mistake.  I understand that the most important thing is to try to speak and to understand what people say."

"It was a good opportunity for me to improve my English - it is just the beginning.  I have to maintain and improve my level by listening radio and read to have more vocabulary.

"Thanks a lot to Stephen and Lynne for your help during these 2 weeks!!

Best regards
Nadia
